American Electric Power (AEP) is one of the most well-known utility companies in the U.S. It is also the operator of the largest transmission system in the U.S., with more than 40,000 miles of high voltage transmission lines. The company owns, operates, or is constructing transmission assets in 13 states, under four Regional Transmission Operators: ERCOT, MISO, PJM, and SPP.

AEP has a large operational footprint across the U.S., with 100+ electric transmission projects in the pipeline. The company has more than $60 billion in U.S. projects planned through 2024 by the members of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the trade association for U.S. investor-owned electric utilities.

2. Xcel Energy

Xcel Energy is an investor-owned utility with more than 20,000 miles of transmission lines and more than 1,200 substations across 10 states: Colorado,  KansasMichiganMinnesotaNew MexicoNorth DakotaOklahoma,  South DakotaTexas, and Wisconsin.

In addition to its current transmission lines, the company has more than 2,000 miles of planned electrical transmission line projects throughout the West and Midwest. A large portion of these projects are being developed in New Mexico and Texas to support industrial projects.
